Summer is zooming by so fast! August is quickly approaching and at my house that means sunflower decorations and back to school preparation. I have two crochet patterns for marshmallow mug hats that would be perfect to decorate for August or to give away. One looks like a sunflower, and the other a pencil. And, I have two ways to dress up your sunflower mug hat too! Let's jump right into the patterns.

Pattern for the base of the sunflower hat:
With Brown yarn row 1 - mc and place 8 hdc in the mc, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (8)
row 2 – 2 hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (16)
row 3 – (2 hdc in the same stitch, hdc in the next) repeat around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (24)
row 4 – in blo - (2 hdc in the same stitch, hdc in the next 2 stitches) repeat around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (32)
rows 5 – in blo – hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (32)
Switch to Jelly Bean yarn.
rows 6-10 – with Jelly Bean yarn and in both loops - hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (32)
row 11 – sl st in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (32)
Pattern for the sunflower petals:
Attach Yellow yarn with a sl st to a front loop from row 5 (one of the remaining loops not worked from that row).
In the same stitch – (4 dc, ch 2, sl st to the 1st chain, 4 dc, sl st to the front loop) – one petal made.
sl st to the next front loop, sl st to the next front loop (2 in a row) and repeat petal instructions. For row 5 make 16 total petals and finish with a sl st to the base of the first petal. DO NOT finish off or cut your yarn.
Second row of petals:
With the yarn still on your hook from the first row of petals, sl st to the front loop from row 4 closest to your hook.
In the same stitch – (4 dc, ch 2, sl st to the 1st chain, 4 dc, sl st to the front loop) – one petal made.
sl st to the next front loop, sl st to the next front loop (2 in a row) and repeat petal instructions. For row 4 make 12 total petals and finish with a sl st to the base of the first petal.
Finish off, cut yarn and weave in ends.
Optionally – use a Diamond Dotz applicator pen and hot glue to attach brown rhinestones to the center of the sunflower. I put a small dot of hot glue where I want the rhinestone to go and then use the applicator pen to pick up the gem and place it on top of the glue.
Another option is to use a peachy blush and an eye shadow brush to apply blush to the inner portion of the sunflower petals.
