Add the cutest cow applique to the Cuddle Buddies Blanket

A crocheted cow applique made with I Love This Yarn and sewn to a crocheted block.

This year I am releasing patterns each month for the Cuddle Buddies Baby Blanket. It's a crocheted blanket with nine cute animal appliques peeking out. Since I was born and raised in Wisconsin, it seems appropriate that the first animal pattern I release is an adorable cow.

While I love this little guy on the Cuddle Buddies blanket, he would also be cute on a hat, wall hanging, bag - anywhere you want to put a happy little cow. And the pattern is beginner friendly so anyone can make it!

While designing this little fellow, I decided I wanted the spots to be felt instead of crochet so the edges would be a little sharper. So, I made a cow spot template so creating the spots would be a breeze. You can find the free printable template at the bottom of this post.

Let's jump right into crocheting this cow!

Gauge:

Not important for this project. If your cow’s face is a little larger or a little smaller it will still fit wonderfully.

Finished Measurements:

My completed cow measures 5 1/2 inches wide x 4 1/2 inches tall.

Yardage:

White – 13 yards

Small amounts of Black, Pink, Light Taupe

Stitch Abbreviations:

mc – magic circle

ch - chain

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

Notes:

  • All pieces use a G 4.0 mm hook except the eyes which use a B 2.25 mm hook.

  • The ch at the start of each row does not count as a stitch.

  • sl st to the first stitch of the row, not the chain.

  • The first stitch of the row SHOULD be in the same stitch you slip stitched into.

Hands pinching a crocheted circle in half in order to sew the end closed and make it look like a cow's ear.

Finish off and leave a long tail. Use a yarn needle to stitch the bottom of the right side of the ear to the bottom of the left side so the ears curl. Leave the rest of the tail attached to sew the ears onto the blanket later.

Assembling the Cuddle Buddies Blanket cow applique:

Here is a sketch of where I chose to put my cow on the blanket.

A sketch on graph paper of a crochet blanket with four colors and one square filled in with a cow applique.

Use a yarn needle and the tails left from each of the body parts to sew the pieces onto one another and the blanket.

1. Sew the muzzle onto the head using the long tail from the muzzle.

2. Sew the eyes on about 2 rows above the muzzle with about 3 open stitches between.

3. Using the long tail on the head, sew the head onto the blanket block. I like to place this at the very bottom of the block so the hooves can hold onto the frame created by the blanket join.

4. Sew the horns on with about 8-9 stitches between them.

Hands opening a crocheted cow's ear to point to where it should be sewn onto a blanket.

5. Sew just the back of the ears about 1 stitch from each of the horns. Stitch into the flat portion of the ear that is against the blanket so the curled portion of each ear is still raised up.

6. Sew the hooves onto the blanket with the back edge overlapping the cow’s head just a bit.

7. Print the cow spot template on paper, cut out the spots and trace them onto the back of some black felt. Cut out the felt spots and use permanent fabric glue to attach them to the cow’s head.

I hope you love this little cow as much as I do!
