A couple years ago I made a hat for my then 6-year-old daughter that she and I both loved. It was a pink hat (her favorite color) and there was a blue bunny applique peeking out of the rolled up brim. I created the applique to look like her favorite stuffed animal, creatively named Blue Bunny, and I just thought it was the cutest thing ever. Fast forward two years and I was packing away the hat that no longer fit her very well and feeling a bit sad that I wouldn't get to see it anymore because I loved the idea of the peek a boo animal and it an idea hit me. What if I made a blanket with the bunny and similar appliques that were all peeking out of the blanket squares? After much trial and error I have the Cuddle Buddies Blanket.
Isn’t it super cute?! The completed blanket is about 31 inches wide and 37 inches long and was designed as a baby blanket. You could of course add in more squares and make your blanket as big as you wanted to.
Its a confident beginner pattern and because there will be video tutorials it could actually be a beginner pattern.
The first week of each month I will release a new pattern for either the blanket itself, its construction, or one of the eight animal appliques. All of the patterns will be free here on my website, and after each animal pattern is released you will also be able to purchase an inexpensive, ad-free, print-friendly copy of the pattern in my shop. At the end of the year I will have a bundle option to purchase the whole blanket pattern as well. And, each part of the blanket will have video tutorials, so if you are a visual learner, I've got you covered.
Supplies needed for the Cuddle Buddies Blanket
If you want to join me in making this adorable blanket here’s what you’ll need for supplies.

A G 4.5 mm hook is used for most of the blanket. I also used a B 2.25 mm and an E 3.5 mm hook
Worsted weight, size 4 yarn – I used five different colors for the blanket itself, all of which are Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn. It’s my favorite brand of worsted weight acrylic yarn because the yarn is very soft, it holds up well to washing and wearing and usage, and they have a ton of great colors. For the blanket I used White, Sea Blue, Stonewash, Dark Country Blue and Sungold. The animals use a variety of colors but all of it is I Love This Yarn. You need less than a 7 oz skein of yarn in each color. I used 6 ounces or 304 yards or less of each color.
Small amounts of felt in various colors AND
Permanent fabric glue for some of the animal details
Throughout the year I will add in other patterns that incorporate these appliques as well because they are just so darn cute and I want to put them on ALL THE THINGS.
I would love it if you would join me in making the blanket and post pictures of your WIPs, finished squares and animals. Please post pictures and share on any social media you have. Be sure to tag me on Instagram @nikki_findmecrafting and use #cuddlebuddiesblanket.
