I’m moving right along in the monthly Marshmallow Mug patterns and next up is July. I have two cute patterns – a patriotic red, white and blue Uncle Sam hat, and one of my all time favorite foods - a watermelon!

For both
Uncle Sam Hat
Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in White or Gray Mist (one of these two for the beard), Fire Red and Royal
White star buttons - You can also find these at Walmart.
Yardage and gauge -
Yardage – 13 yards each of Fire Red, White or Gray Mist and Royal yarns
Gauge - 16 hdc worked over 12 1/2 rows with a G hook measures an approximate 4-inch square.
Watermelon Hat
Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Fire Red, White and Jelly Bean
Black beads for the “seeds” - I used 6 mm Jet Black Bicone Glass Bead Strand from Hobby Lobby
Yardage and gauge -
Yardage – About 15 yards of Fire Red, 10 yards of Jelly Bean, and a small amount of White
Gauge - 15 hdc worked over 12 1/2 rows with a G hook measures an approximate 4-inch square.
Stitch Abbreviations:
ch – chain
mc – magic circle
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
blo – back loop only
flo – front loop only
inv hdc dec – invisible half double crochet decrease
sl st – slip stitch
puff stitch – (yo, insert hook into stitch, pull up a stitch) 4 times (there should be 9 loops on the hook), yo and draw through all 9
Notes:
-The first stitch of each row is placed in the same stitch you slip stitched to.

Uncle Sam Marshmallow Mug Hat Pattern:
With an F 3.75 mm hook
Start with Royal yarn row 1 - mc and place 10 hdc in the mc, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (10)
row 2 – 2 hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (20)
row 3 – (2 hdc in the same stitch, hdc in the next) repeat around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (30)
row 4 – (2 hdc in the same stitch, 2 hdc) repeat around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (40)
row 5 – (2 hdc in the same stitch, 3 hdc) repeat around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (50)
row 6 – in the blo – hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (50)
row 7 – With White yarn - under both loops – hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (50)
row 8 – (4 hdc, inv hdc dec) repeat around, 1 hdc in each of the last two stitches, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (42)
row 9 – (3 hdc, inv hdc dec) repeat around, 1 hdc in each of the last two stitches, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (34)
row 10 – With Fire Red yarn - hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (34)
row 11 – sl st in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (34)
row 12 – in flo – 2 hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (68)
row 13 –under both loops - hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (68)
Finish off and weave in ends.
Beard Pattern for the Uncle Sam Marshmallow Mug Hat:

Using F 3.75 mm hook and either White or Gray Mist yarn
ch 17
puff stitch in the second ch from the hook, ch 1, (sl st in next ch, puff stitch in next ch, ch 1) 8 times finishing with a sl st in the last ch.
Finish off and weave in the ends.
Place the completed hat on your mug and test where you want to place the beard.
Holding one side to the hat, apply glue to the other side and glue onto the hat. After it cools, put glue on the remaining side and place onto the hat and hold until cool.
Use hot glue to attach the stars.
Watermelon Marshmallow Mug Hat Pattern:
With G 4 mm hook
Start with Fire Red yarn
row 1 - mc and place 8 hdc in the mc, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (8)
row 2 – 2 hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (16)
row 3 – (2 hdc in the same stitch, hdc in the next) repeat around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (24)
row 4 – (2 hdc in the same stitch, 2 hdc) repeat around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (32)
rows 5-7 – hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (32)
row 8 – With White yarn - sc in each stitch around, sl st to the first sc, ch 1 (32)
row 9 – With Jelly Bean yarn - sc in each stitch around, sl st to the first sc, ch 1 (32)
row 10 – hdc in each stitch around, sl st to the first hdc, ch 1 (32)
row 11 – sl st in each stitch around, sl st to the first sl st (32)
Finish off and weave in ends.
Use a very small amount of hot glue to attach the black beads to the red part of the hat. Too much glue will leave you with hot glue snot that will be visible.
