If you are crocheting along with me, this month's patterns mark halfway to a whole year's worth of mug hats! I love using the set I made for myself to decorate each month, and I have been making extras each month so I will have full sets to give away at the end of the year.
This month I have a bee pattern and a sunhat pattern perfect for the start of summer. Let's jump right in!
Here's a video tutorial:
Gauge:
14 hdc worked over 12 rows with G hook measures an approximate 4-inch-square
Yardage:
bee hat – 15.5 yards of I Love This Yarn in Yellow, 10 yards of I Love This Yarn in Black
sun hat – 38 yards of I Love This Yarn in Toasted Almond
Stitches:
mc – magic circle
ch - chain
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
hdc – half double crochet
tr – treble/triple crochet - yarn over twice, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and draw yarn through stitch (4 loops on), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (3 loops remaining), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on), yarn over and draw through the last 2 loops on the hook.
Reverse sc/crab stitch (if you are right-handed) – working to the right instead of the left as usual, insert hook in the stitch you just finished, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. It is a regular single crochet, but backward.
Notes:
- Start the first stitch of each row in the same stitch as your sl st
- The ch at the start of each row does not count as a stitch
- sl st to the first stitch of the row

Bee hat pattern:
When finishing each row, complete the last stitch with the new color. Do not tie off colors but carry them up the back.

Finish off and use a tapestry needle to go under the first stitch of the row with your yarn tail and close the gap.
Weave in ends.
Adding antennae:
Cut a black pipe cleaner in half and in half again. Use the two smaller pieces as antennae. Insert the ends of the pipe cleaners into round 2 of the hat.
Flip hat inside out and bend 1/2 inch of the pipe cleaner ends sideways. Use hot glue to glue the ends in place.
Flip hat right side out and curl the top of the antennae outward. Optionally, hot glue yellow pom poms to the curled portion of the antennae.
Bee wing pattern:
With White yarn
H hook
All the stitches will be done in the same magic circle.
First wing - mc, ch 4, 4 tr, ch 4, sl st in the mc
Second wing - ch 4, 4 tr, ch 4, sl st in the mc
Finish off leaving a 10 in long tail.
Wrap both the starting and ending tails around the center of the wings and knot at the back. Weave in the ends.
Glue wings to the back of the bee hat at around row 5.
