A Children's Pocket Scarf with an Adorable Applique Keeps Them Warm in Style

A child wearing a multi-colored pocket scarf with kitten appliques on the pockets.

This week my daughter asked me to make her a scarf, but not just any scarf. She requested one with pockets on the ends for her hands. Then we decided that we needed to up the cuteness factor by adding one of the animal appliques from the Cuddle Buddies Blanket on the pockets. There was some debate about which was the cutest animal pattern and when all was said and done the most adorable darn pocket scarf ever was born.

This pocket scarf pattern is super easy and fast since it uses size 5 bulky weight yarn. And while this one fits my nine-year-old perfectly, you could easily add rows to make the scarf longer or take out rows if you need it to be shorter.

And you can use ANY of the Cuddle Buddies patterns on the pockets – cow, pig, horse, sloth, monkey, calico kitten, bunny, koala, or bear. I chose to use fuzzy yarns to create the kitten, but an applique made with worsted weight yarn would also be adorable.

Let's jump right in!

Child-Sized Pocket Scarf Pattern

A multi-colored pocket scarf made with Loops & Threads Charisma yarn with kitten appliques on the pockets.

This pattern is for a scarf that is about 49 inches long.

Ch 17

row 1 - Starting in the second ch from the hook, 1 hdc in each ch, ch 1 (16)

row 2 - Hdc in each stitch, ch 1 (16)

rows 3-140 - Repeat row 3 until you have 140 rows

Hands holding a Clover crochet hook and two rows of crochet.

Once you have the base of the scarf complete it's time to crochet your animal appliques - one for each pocket. All of my free Cuddle Buddies patterns are here. The kitten specifically is here.

Sew the appliques onto the back side of the scarf (you may not have a side you would prefer as the back, but in my case, I did). Place the top of the heads near the ends of the scarf. I sewed on the kittens so the tops of their heads were 5 rows from each of the ends.

Hands crocheting with Bernat Pipsqueak yarn on the border of a pocket scarf.

Fold the ends of the scarf 14 rows up toward the middle so the applique is facing outward. I found it easiest to use sewing clips to hold this in place.

Attach Bernat Pipsqueak to the lower right corner of the scarf with a slip knot and ch 1.

Sc through the loops on both the pocket and the back of the scarf and continue single crocheting in each stitch until you get to the corner. Place three single crochets in the corner stitch and then continue working one single crochet in each stitch until you reach the next corner and repeat. At each side of the two pockets single crochet through the pocket and the back of the scarf.

Continue until you reach the lower left corner where you can finish off and then weave in the ends.
